Description

In his new novel, Shalom Auslander applies his satirical scalpel to the delicate issues of identity politics. Seventh Seltzer has done everything he can to break from the past, but in his overbearing, narcissistic mother’s last moments he is drawn back into the life he left behind. And anyone who has read Auslander before will know that when I say “applies his satirical scalpel”, I mean something more like “tosses a hand-grenade and runs away laughing” . The matriarch of the persecuted group the Am-Cams has died leaving the children to dispose of the body through traditional means.

Seventh Seltzer works in Manhattan publishing and has to vet identity stories vying to be the next Great American Novel: “The Heroin-Addicted-Autistic-Christian-American-Diabetic one” and “the Gender-Neutral-Albino-Lebanese-Eritrean-American” one are two examples. The story is hilarious although it falls at the end with the deed only half done but reading thoroughly recommended. Diving into the new lives of the 12 siblings and their conflicting views on their cultural heritage, this story gets chaotic and can be sometimes hilarious.

Esta é a permissa deste livro provocador, intrigante, satírico, politicamente incorrecto e divertido, mas que levanta também algumas questões pertinentes : Quem realmente somos? It was the most tragic thing that ever happened, otherwise why would they remember it, even if they didn’t?Sytuacja wymyka się jednak spod kontroli, bo ciało matki waży ponad 200 kg, a właśnie jest bardzo upalnie. He grew up in an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood in Monsey, New York where he describes himself as having been "raised like a veal". Författaren själv växte upp i Monsey, New York, där många ortodoxa judar bor, och det märks att hans bakgrund varit viktig för berättelsen.

Irreverent and written with Auslander's incomparable humor, Mother for Dinner is an exploration of legacy, assimilation, the things we owe our families, and the things we owe ourselves.Taken beyond face (pun intended) value this is a story about identity, culture, stereotypes and the complex push and pull of familial relationships. The book is very funny and the premise is very clever but the joke is taken so far that it ends up being repeated too many times. Confronting his Can-Am heritage comes to the fore when his mother – known as Mudd – has started to eat nothing but Whopper burgers.

Of course, any of my criticisms could be taken as proof that the author has achieved what he intended but he really was trying too hard towards the end of the story. Very funny satire described aptly by entertainment weekly as “like an unintentional bark of laughter at a funeral. Auslander has published a collection of short stories, Beware of God and a memoir, Foreskin's Lament: A Memoir. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.Mudd is almost a dark-matter liberal in how much she hates everyone except Can-Ams, and her particular loathing of Gilligan’s Island and Jack Nicholson. In 1914, Julius Seltzer left the paradisiacal “Old Country” with his sister Julia, who pretended to be his wife and traveled with him to Detroit to work for Henry Ford. Auslander used slightly ironic and comedic tone ornamented by the fantastical folklore of the past - on top of being funny and entertaining, it strips off the cliche, boring question of 'Why should we be divided, if we are all indeed the same human race? His work, often confronting his Orthodox Jewish background, has been featured on Public Radio International's This American Life and in The New Yorker.
