Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer, and Moholy-Nagy re-assembled in Britain during the mid-1930s and lived and worked in the Isokon housing development in Lawn Road in London before the war caught up with them. Gropius and Breuer went on to teach at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and worked together before their professional split. Their collaboration produced, among other projects, the Aluminum City Terrace in New Kensington, Pennsylvania and the Alan I W Frank House in Pittsburgh. The Harvard School was enormously influential in America in the late 1920s and early 1930s, producing such students as Philip Johnson, I. M. Pei, Lawrence Halprin and Paul Rudolph, among many others. Members of Bauhaus University now no longer designproducts for the industry, but they do pursue research about what new technologies mean for society. Colorful is my favorite color," Gropius famously said, and a lot of the design that came out of the movement was strikingly colorful indeed. Junghans are affordable and a great introduction to German manufacturers. Junghans Max Bill Automatic 027/3502After Germany's defeat in World War I and the establishment of the Weimar Republic, a renewed liberal spirit allowed an upsurge of radical experimentation in all the arts, which had been suppressed by the old regime. Many Germans of left-wing views were influenced by the cultural experimentation that followed the Russian Revolution, such as constructivism. Such influences can be overstated: Gropius did not share these radical views, and said that Bauhaus was entirely apolitical. [8] Just as important was the influence of the 19th-century English designer William Morris (1834–1896), who had argued that art should meet the needs of society and that there should be no distinction between form and function. [9] Thus, the Bauhaus style, also known as the International Style, was marked by the absence of ornamentation and by harmony between the function of an object or a building and its design. a b Frampton, Kenneth (1992). "The Bauhaus: Evolution of an Idea 1919–32". Modern Architecture: A Critical History (3rd ed. rev.ed.). New York: Thames and Hudson, Inc. p.124. ISBN 978-0-500-20257-9. German architectural modernism was known as Neues Bauen. Beginning in June 1907, Peter Behrens' pioneering industrial design work for the German electrical company AEG successfully integrated art and mass production on a large scale. He designed consumer products, standardized parts, created clean-lined designs for the company's graphics, developed a consistent corporate identity, built the modernist landmark AEG Turbine Factory, and made full use of newly developed materials such as poured concrete and exposed steel. Behrens was a founding member of the Werkbund, and both Walter Gropius and Adolf Meyer worked for him in this period.

Stowa is a German watch brand that has been around since the late 1920s. A maker of high-quality watches, the brand is known for different watch styles like pilot, marine, sports, and chronographs. Starting off our list is a German timepiece designed by one of Bauhaus’s very own proteges, Max Bill. The Junghans Max Bill Handaufzug is a prime example of a form meeting function. With its slender indices, thin pencil hands, luminescent nodes, and Junghans signature, this watch boasts a clean look with meaningful design features. The academy, which belongs to the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, offers not only labs, but also one-year master's programs in cooperation with the Anhalt University of Applied Sciencesand Humboldt University of Berlin. The Bauhaus school in Dessau was reopened in GDR times as a mixture of cultural and research institutions. The foundation, createdin 1994, continues to promote this approach. An essential part of the curriculum at the Bauhaus was Swiss painter Johannes Itten's course in color theory, which taught the seven different methods of color contrast, and deeply analyzed the use of color. Itten was the first person to refer to colors as "warm" or "cool." He would also associate specific colors with musical tones.

A watch is a timekeeper first, but it also acts as a fashion accessory capable of completing anyone’s look. Need to look sophisticated for an important event? Pair your suit with a sleek dress watch, and people will take you more seriously. Preparing for a camping trip and need something to make you look and feel like a pro? Strap on a sporty Casio piece and you are good to go. Oskar Schlemmer (1972). Tut Schlemmer (ed.). The Letters and Diaries of Oskar Schlemmer. Translated by Krishna Winston. ISBN 978-0-13-586694-8.The final watch is recognisably Scandinavian. But the Bauhaus influence is clear. It's a slim, inexpensive quartz model, that I've made less formal with the canvas strap. It's not just a fun watch. Compared to others at this price it's among the best watches.

Meyer became director when Gropius resigned in February 1928, [1] and brought the Bauhaus its two most significant building commissions, both of which still exist: five apartment buildings in the city of Dessau, and the Bundesschule des Allgemeinen Deutschen Gewerkschaftsbundes (ADGB Trade Union School) in Bernau bei Berlin. Meyer favoured measurements and calculations in his presentations to clients, along with the use of off-the-shelf architectural components to reduce costs. This approach proved attractive to potential clients. The school turned its first profit under his leadership in 1929. There are no more workshops for painting, furniture building, weaving or metal in the historic and new buildings of Bauhaus University. Originally, under the leadership of founding director Walter Gropius, artists and craftsmen were intended to work together and learn from each other. Today, the university offers departments of architecture and urbanism, art and design, civil engineering and media. Like the Stowa it has a clean, legible dial and Arabic numerals. There's a sub-second dial on this model, adding a subtle complication.

What is “Bauhaus?”

Marty Bax (1991). Bauhaus Lecture Notes 1930–1933. Theory and practice of architectural training at the Bauhaus, based on the lecture notes made by the Dutch ex-Bauhaus student and architect J.J. van der Linden of the Mies van der Rohe curriculum. Amsterdam: Architectura & Natura. ISBN 90-71570-04-5. At the beginning of the 1920s, Bauhaus designers worked closely withindustrial production. Bauhaus artists designed products with simple shapes that were easy to handle. Walter Gropius wanted art and technology to form a new unity. Underneath the dial is a J805.1 manual-winding calibre equipped with 17 jewels and a power reserve that can last for up to 42 hours. Protected by a layer of plexiglass on top, everything from its thin stainless steel structure to its matte silver dial screams Bauhaus and the minimalism it stands for. To complete its look, Junghans pairs this Max Bill piece with a stainless steel mesh bracelet. 2. The chair’s design supports its function to be economical while remaining aesthetically pleasing in its simple design. Innovation
