Description

The Little Drummer Boy’ was originally known as The Carol of the Drum, and the text is based on an old Czech carol. It was written by American classical music composer and teacher Katherine Kennicott Davis in 1940. It was recorded by Bing Crosby and David Bowie in 1977, with the new addition of the ‘Peace On Earth’ countermelody which has since become an accepted part of the song. Tiny Tim talks about going to church and says, “it might be pleasant to them to remember upon Christmas Day, who made lame beggars walk, and blind men see.”

Good Christians, All Rejoice is a lively carol, the first mention of which came in the 14th century, but earliest manuscripts date from the 1400’s, and was originally intended to teach peasants about Christianity through folk music. The setting is also well known as In Dulci Jubilo. In 1703, another collection, Chants des Noëls Anciens et Modernes, was printed by Christophe Ballard (1641–1715), in Paris. Reaching No. 1 in Christmas 1990, Saviour’s Day was written by Chris Eaton and shown to Cliff Richard at a Christmas party. The music video was filmed in front of the famous Dorset landmark Durdle Door. in Ukrainian) Український пасічник [ uk] [ Ukrainian Beekeeper]. volume VII, no. 1, January 1934, p. С. 1. [ full citation needed] This folk hymn compares Jesus to the tree of life from the Garden of Eden. The simple rhyme scheme of the text and the soaring melody are a welcome addition to any carol service. The text has been set by various composers including Jeremiah Ingalls, Elizabeth Poston and John Rutter. A modern form of the practice of caroling can be seen in " Dial-A-Carol," an annual tradition held by students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, wherein potential audiences call the singers to request a performance over phone call. [14] Carols for dancing [ edit ]

This 'urban legend' says that the song was written at a time when Roman Catholic worship was illegal in England and Catholics had to find covert ways of communicating their faith. The third is dark, solemn and scary, reflecting Scrooge’s fears of death and also the sadness that will emanate from him if he does not change, but also with an indistinct face and shape, perhaps suggesting the potential malleability of the future. I don´t know where this kind of moral storytelling originated, probably tens of thousands of years ago when the first shaman or chief thought it would be cool to use vision, prophecy, the power of dreams, imagination and a grain of indoctrination to communicate the right behavior to her/his people. Ethics and moral are important, omnipresent, and timeless topics that shouldn´t be reduced to the few holidays of different religions to give people, working against the interests of humankind to enrich themselves the whole year, a bad conscience (as if this would be possible, as if they would even realize what monsters they are as they don´t directly kill, but just indirectly support the misery by playing key roles of a dysfunctional system), but used in everyday life, politics, and every single decision. Ok, before it gets completely unrealistic, I´ll better end this review.

Calypso Carol

Carols remained mainly unsung, especially in churches, until Victorian times, when two men called William Sandys and Davis Gilbert collected lots of old Christmas music from villages in England. Carols were stilling being sung as folk songs in places like pubs but they often weren't thought of as 'proper' or 'nice' songs by the middle or upper classes. (Singing carols in pubs still happens today and there's some very famous carol singing in pubs in the north of England, especially in North Derbyshire and South Yorkshire.) The image of the Holly and the Ivy is an ancient folkloric trope representing the male and the female, and fertility. Like many early carols it was orally preserved and passed down through the centuries before being ‘collected’ and published by Cecil Sharp. Each verse compares an aspect of the Holly to a virtue of the Virgin Mary. Giuseppe Cacciatore (1960). "Alfonso Maria de Liguori, santo". Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani. Vol.2. Treccani. so let us follow scrooges (eventual) example, when he says ‘i will honour christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year,' and allow the christmas spirit be something we not only feel this time of year, but always.
