About this deal

Quote from: shoulders on October 17, 2022, 01:09:05 PMThose digesting these events should remember that as awful as Truss and Kwarteng would have been, there's something equally alarming about the fact that elected representatives can select a path then be basically told No, the markets can just upset things to the extent there is no possibility of pursuing it.

That started the initial price-spiral, and once it starts it's like musical chairs. If you're a large company with some level of price-setting power and you know inflation is, right now, at say 8% then you'd be a mug to leave your prices as they are. In fact, you're better off raising them by 10%, that way you're ahead of the game if/when the music stops. Easy money! Bonus, you are devaluing your biggest cost (employee wages), and can offer them below inflation raises and cut your costs in real terms. Ker-ching! Since becoming foreign secretary last year, China's state-owned media have called her “a radical populist” and described her China-related speeches as “crazy”, said The Guardian. European leaders hoping for more constructive post-Brexit relations with the UK will be wary of Truss as prime minister given she has frequently raised tensions with Brussels by demanding parts of the Brexit deal be renegotiated and threatened to provoke a trade war between the EU and the UK by triggering Article 16 of the Withdrawal Agreement. European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen offered her obligatory congratulations but added that she wanted a “constructive relationship” with Truss, “in full respect of our agreements”.For more details, cf. From nukes to corporation tax: Liz Truss’s history of flip-flopping, by Ben Quinn, published in The Guardian (London and Manchester, England) of Friday 14 th October 2022. Quote from: Alberon on October 19, 2022, 02:57:09 PMThree line whip means, I think, they have to vote for the government to keep the whip.

Quote...when I became shadow chancellor, I made it clear that I would plan for every option – including a run on the pound – if we were elected. At the time I was accused of making a serious faux pas, but I wanted the markets to know that we had a serious plan for our economy whatever was thrown at us. There's been lots of superficial appreciation of "sensible" Jeremy Hunt coming in to save the day, however his new version of austerity will be opposed in one way or another by MPs from all parties. There are loads of bitter ex-Ministers who aren't afraid of causing trouble and since "getting Brexit done", the Tories have lost their unifying rasion d'être. Over 200,000 people have signed a petition "Call an immediate general election to end the chaos of the current government" The President of the European Commission Ursula Von der Leyen was therefore understandably prudent in her response to the news. It is a way of finding out the direction of the wind at a lower cost, which is why wind vanes have been used for a very long time, in particular, to find out the cardinal origin of the wind, i.e. whether it comes from the North, South, East or West.

As she's grilled about her new job, she suddenly seems distracted as she grabs for her mobile phone. BBC News seems determined to show itself as on-side as possible to the new government, probably worried about losing the licence fee. True to form, one host on Russian state TV reacted to her victory in the Tory leadership election by declaring: “Stupidity has triumphed: Liz Truss has become the new prime minister… If Boris Johnson achieved Brexit, she wants to achieve something entirely different – the end of the world.” Analysts said Richard Hughes, the head of the Treasury's independent forecaster, the Office for Budget Responsibility, would be forced by the new figures to take a tough stance on assessing the impact of further borrowing on the public finances. And a third Tory MP who has worked closely with Kwarteng called him "the worst combination of laziness and arrogance". They said that, as Truss could not easily be ousted, the chancellor would have to go. "It just won't work with both of them in the driving seat."...

You can empathise with someones struggle with depression without condoning someones behaviour. You had depression, you recognised the pain it causes, if you recognise that pain in others including Gullis you are empathising. Thinking he should feel self-disgust for his behaviour is not in contradiction to this. Technically, Truss is safe under the rules for nearly a year (her term in office has just started remember), but the reality is if the letters mount up she will be told to go. While Beijing has yet to issue a formal statement on her appointment as prime minister, a prominent Chinese journalist offered a similarly pessimistic view of the UK’s future under Truss. Reaction to Truss’s victory has also divided Europe. Her conversion from committed Remainer to Brexiteer zealot and her threat to tear up the Northern Ireland Protocol has meant that her appointment was greeted with caution in Brussels. The BBC’s Europe editor, Katya Adler, reported that “off the record – European politicians view Truss’s words as a political gaffe, ‘ill-befitting the future leader of one of the world’s most powerful nations’, as a senior EU figure said to me.”Yes. Absolutely. Like I said, probably not very clearly, my sympathy is greatly leavened with the knowledge of the suffering she and her friends have intentionally caused for so long A garden or roof weathervane can be found for very cheap: the first weathervanes are sold for just over 20 pounds. It all depends on the quality and the use you intend for it: functional or decorative? Rather rudimentary or aesthetic?
