I have the MC-14 converter and the image quality is excellent; I struggle to tell any difference in IQ when the converter's on or off! However, a 2x converter's a different matter. For those who've got this converter what is the quality like? I would end up with a 80-300mm f5.6 zoom, which is a bit slow, so I wouldn't really want to have to stop it down further just to get decent IQ. Also, how does it compare to the Panasonic 100-300 f4/5.6, which I could probably get secondhand at a similar price?

If you only ever need 150mm, the 40-150/f2.8 will probably give you better results. It has a faster aperture, which gives you more flexibility, and when stopped down to f/4 is sharper at 150mm than the Panasonic-Leica is (79 lp/mm vs. ~61 lp/mm) as it's closer to wide open. Along with the new PRO lens, we have come up with the M.Zuiko Digital 1.4x Teleconverter MC-14, which is the world's first rear teleconverter for the Compact System Cameras. Attaching it between the M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f2.8 PRO and the camera body changes the combination into a compact, high-performance telephoto lens with a focal length of 112mm to 420mm (35mm equivalent). Leaving the closest shooting distance unchanged, the maximum shooting magnification is increased to 0.6x (35mm equivalent). As it specifically designed for the Compact System Camera, this teleconverter also minimizes image degradation.

I've not used the 50-200 either, but the 40-150 with the G9 is very nice. I'm pretty sure the Oly + Pana weather sealing doesn't really work that well, there's been posts about it here and I can tell you that compared to mounting it to my E-M1, it's definitely more "loose," so if weather sealing is a factor go for the Pana. The latest version for M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 L is version 1.0. Firmware update is not required. I have neither the Leica 50-200 nor the Oly 40-150 Pro, but I have had some experience using similar focal lengths for shooting kids soccer games. When they were young, my cheap 40-150 R was sufficient to capture the field, but when they got older, it was too short (because the fields got bigger). I tried the Pana 45-200 but didn't like it that much. I ended up with the 4/3rd ZD 50-200 SWD + EC-14. With or without the teleconverter, this lens is the winner. I chose it primarily because the 40-150 Pro would have been too short, and adding the MC-14 would have made the high cost even higher (four years ago when it was new). The used 50-200 SWD was much less expensive, and gave me great results with my EM1. With the EC-14, I could reach across the field, as they got bigger.
