Description

For me, hedge witchery and hedge priest/esscraft must be creative, aligned with the times that we live in, exploratory, healing and, as far as possible, original.

Therefore, dear visitor, if you proceed, your hedge magic and spirituality will not be like exactly like mine because your own individual style will emerge with experience. Still - if you can highlight this book and tab it up, it will work for those who want 'a year in the life' of a hedge witch. It could also lead to alliances with nature spirits and to the gaining of a familiar and so to increased power for any spell-casting work. The art of hedge riding can still be seen today, in the traditional portrait of a witch riding her broom.THE GREEN HEDGE WITCH goes into detail about the symbolic hedge between the Worlds and how we may start to work with nature spirits, principally trees. There are many, many ways to practice hedge magic and hedgerow spirituality now in the present day and to reinterpret the themes and ideas. Each of these refers to a symbolic hedgerow, one which could be seen to divide the everyday world of the human community from what was perceived as being beyond it – the Otherworld of wild nature spirits and ancestral spirits and elves or faeriekind. Elements of the Imbolg magic following on such a charm may include candle flames, spring water, swan feathers and a rowan wand. The shamanic nature of hedge riding appeals to many within the tradition who are aware of the hedge riding nature of this path.

Chances are good that she grew or gathered them herself, harvested them, dried them, and has experimented with them to see what they can and cannot do—all the while, she's been writing down her notes for future reference. It is a perfect time to say goodbye to whatever harms us or limits us – or to any harm we might be causing. This places Rowan in her mid-teens and the themes of the novella match her age, with Rowan trying to fit in, make friends, assert her independence. To go through the hedge was to travel into another world, to follow the heart into the wilds and to receive information to bring back into this world. One thing she does get right about hedgecraft and hedgewitches is that the tradition is based on the old wise woman or man who lived on the edge of town, by the hedge rows. Rowan is a young witch who travels to visit her aunt to learn about the magic in the town they live. This path is highly in tune with nature and elements and it’s also connected to green, kitchen, and hearth witchcraft. Such a charm or something like it can be followed by a spirit journey (a light trance) in which to meet with faerie familiars and/or the land-spirits, ancestors or even the deities. I really enjoyed this quick, quirky little book, it's got some lovely little life lessons in it and was a nice side story to Threadneedle.

Set in a modern day magical world, The Hedge Witch follows Rowan on a summer visit to relatives in a small town, nestled in the Welsh countryside, before she starts sixth form. It was written in the form of letters, advising two newcomers to the craft on ritual and practice, but unfortunately, as the author was not privy to all the readers beliefs (obv. Upon her arrival, things are rather suspicious as magical events are causing unrest and panic in the secret community of those wise to such practices and when it becomes clear that even the cowans- non magical folk - are taking notice, Rowan is determined to find out what is going on and put a stop to it no mater what.It might even be ideal to read up a bit more about Wicca before getting into this one as some information is inaccurate. She apologizes for that and reiterates that these are her beliefs and that no one should ever think she was stating her way is the only way.

It is fitting that the book ends with the words “I love being a hedgewitch, it is what I am all about”. This book has no ref to hetcate, persphone, poppets etc witch you might get in a proper witcraft book.Similar to the practice of kitchen witchcraft, hedge witchery often focuses on the hearth and home as the center of magical activity. Being in a family with an affinity for plant magic, Rowan indulges in tales of friendship and self-discovery. And yet the book focuses upon the Dark Goddess (not an evil Deity but ‘Dark’ in the sense of hidden – like the scientific concept of ‘dark matter’ – and concerned with the realm of the dead as a place of healing and renewal. Held deep within the tradition is the art of hedge riding, of walking between the worlds, of being able to find the liminal places and to traverse the paths that lead to deeper wisdom and knowledge. This story focuses on Rowan Greenfinch, a witch who's mother sends her to Wales during the summer holidays to spend some time in the countryside with her eccentric Aunt Winnifred and learn more about the family tradition of Hedgecraft.
